Oh thank heavens. I was getting really scared that I wouldn't be able to get just normal sushi. I loved the service - so friendly and personable, the other guests were friendly, too. The sushi was very solid with generous portions. I really, really liked this place!

Chicago, New York, the west coast are great but Still, the best sushi resides here in Mt. Pleasant SC! well made, tasty, not pretentious, fresh, fair size, great service great prices in a humble atmosphere as I experienced in Japan. You will not regret this perfect meal and you will come back as we have for the last 12 years! Enjoy.

Absolutely fabulous if you are craving sushi and are in a casual mood. You do not have to dress up, the sushi is wonderful, our waitress was delightful, and the prices were great. If you're looking for ambiance, this isn't the place for you, but it is just right if you want good food at a reasonable price in an uncomplicated environment.

The service is quick and friendly, and I wanted to like this place-- but the red flags went up for a reason. If you do go, best not to get too adventurous. Avoid the eel. This place isn't dangerous, and I didn't get sick or anything crazy; but in Charleston the bar is plenty higher than, "Well, at least we didn't get food poisoning."

I used to think this place was closed down or just really sketch, but a few months ago I tried it out with a friend and learned that though it doesn't look pretty, it's a good place to go for sushi! I've since been here 3 times. It's not necessarily my faaavorite place to go, but the service has always been good, I appreciate their reasonable prices, and the wasabi is nice and spicy. I recommend trying it out if you're over on Coleman Blvd. The eel roll is my favorite! :)

Don't let the exterior of the building fool you - this place has excellent sushi. I'm hesitant to say its the best sushi in town because it is so different than everywhere else. I haven't been to Japan to try actual Japanese sushi, but I think this is the closest things charleston has to authentic sushi. Its simply unfooled around with compared to the other places around town. No fancy sauces and very few things are fried. The owners let the sushi speak for itself and the sushi speaks of quality and freshness. The chunks of sushi in the rolls are exactly that... chunks. There isn't any other place that gives you such large quantities of meat per roll, and all for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend Oriental Garden.

This place is awesome! I just moved to the area and was looking for a great sushi place, and happened upon this place on yelp. I decided to try it because it had such good reviews. The exterior of the restaurant is a bit odd, but my friend and I decided to try it anyway. I got the chicken teriyaki and my friend got the philadelphia roll and super crunch roll. Let me tell you the chicken teriyaki is honestly the best I have ever had. You can tell the chicken is real and fresh and cooked perfectly. The miso soup and salad that come with it are always delicious, and I NEVER like miso soup or ginger salad. The portion was a great size, perfect for my dinner and enough for left overs the next day. My friend loved her sushi and said the philly role was one of the best she has ever had. The gyoza was also amazing. It is extremely convenient to be able to pull up to a drive-thru window instead of getting out of the car and walking into the building and waiting for the food. I have been to this place 4 times now, and I can't stop going back. It is amazing! I would recommend this place to anyone!

Don't let the exterior of this place fool you - these guys know how to put together some SERIOUSLY delicious sushi! Looks like a little dive joint but the food is out of this world. Been here several times and would always recommend it. Love it so much, we had them do party platters for us for a friend's party and all I can say is (besides the lovely presentation) they were a HUGE hit! if you like sushi, definitely give this place a try.

Like everyone else said the place is not fancy but the sushi is GREAT! The best I have found in the charleston area. I would recommend the terriyaki chicken and any of the sushi rolls. They also have a drive thru window that we use most of the time. Extremely convienent to pick up an take home.

This is our sushi place when we visit, usually for take-out, as there's zero ambiance. Some people have mentioned that it looks like a renovated burger joint, which is probably why it looks funny from the outside. But please don't let this dissuade you, as the fish is so fresh and so good; we're planning on having it a second time tonight (a major thing for us, as we're in barbeque and fried chicken country, which we can't get done decently at home, but considering the holidays, we need something that is closer to what we normally eat, and it sucks to say that this place is better than most of the places we've had up north). Super fresh. We ordered sashimi from them last night. The tuna and salmon were as expected--excellent. The squid perfectly cut, and gentle on the tongue. Mackarel--a bit tarte, likely marinated, but good (and stinky). Surf clam--chewy but good. Yellow tail--yum. Served with a bowl of correctly cooked sashimi rice (touch of rice wine vinagre and sugar--but not too sweet or tangy), good soy sauce, medium-strong wasabi. The chopsticks were the standard variety, but we had good ones at home. Definitely a place to get some great sushi. YUM Update: the family decided to order another set for the 6 of us the following night, with no complaints from us. Total for way too much sashimi and sushi for 6, $99 from the take out window.

The service was good, but the food was not. The spicy tuna was minced.. not whole and the crab in the soft shell crab was cold, having been cooked a while back. The other "collar" fish was smothered in teriyaki.. not very creative. sorry, .. was looking forward to it..

Woohooo! As good as it gets! I visited this place with fellow Yelper! Bill M. and a few other family members. Im glad I went with them becasue Bill M. and Aunt D knew what to order and man, it was a great experience. We started with edimame and seaweed salad. Both were a great beginning to what was a terrific dinner experience. The main course consisted of many pieces of sushi. We had: Yellowtail w/ scallion Spicy Tuna Sweet Shrimp Scallop Tuna Flying fish roe w/ quail egg Every piece was just as fantastic as the next. All was very fresh and the presentation appealing. The flavors were perfect and danced across my palate. Can you tell Im excited about this place? A few things were new to me such as the fish roe and spicy tuna. I was very pleased. I was also given a piece of the octopus of which was very tasty but of course a bit chewy. Still, very good. We finished the experience with the fried shrimp heads. As I was told, the shrimp heads were from the sweet shrimp and I've got to tell ya-these fried heads were very tasty. I have never had them and was a bit leary of trying them but I am so glad that I did. I will certainly and I mean CERTAINLY return to this little gem. Thank you Bill M. (Uncle Willy) and Aunt D for such a great dining experience.

The exterior and the ambiance is as the other reviewers describe, which I don't really mind. My wife and I wen't there because of the raging reviews I read here about the food. We found the service was good and friendly. The food is fresh but just decent in my opinion. They have the problem of serving enormous (in diameter) rolls that are really hard to eat, unlike good sushi places I had been to before. Finally, if they have been cooking something aromatic in the kitchen, you'll probably smell like it when you get home... I am sure they can fix that...

The original sushi restaurant in Mount Pleasant is still the best! When we moved here in 1998 there were two -- the other one, don't remember the name, closed. Oriental Garden is still here because it's the real thing. I'm half Japanese, grew up in Japan, and I can tell you it reminds me of places I went when I was growing up. The restaurant is not fancy but the food is delicious; the sushi chefs Hiro and Lee are so friendly and make great sushi; and the wait staff are really good friendly people. So get over there! Make this your new local secret!

Great quality. Sushi was very fresh. Perfect temperature. Prices were not unreasonable considering Mt P. Little old couple was cranking out the sushi quickly. Salmon Nigiri was nicely marbled, and buttery. The yellowtail and toro were also rich and buttery. Looks like a hole in the wall outside and inside, but the sushi is definitely a winner.

Best sushi in Charleston. The service is awesome too. I have an undeniable (kind of extreme) addiction to the Green Lip Muscles and their sushi & teriyaki salmon combo. As in, I order it at least twice a week. Sometimes more. If my girlfriend and I are too busy to go sit down and eat, no problem...I just order takeout as I'm on the way home, and pick it up at the drive thru to-go window - it's that good. Not sure if they have sushi addiction rehab, but I may need it thanks to this place!

This place does not look fancy and it's not. It's just really, really good sushi. If you want fancy go elsewhere. If you want the best sushi in Charleston, go here. I've had sushi all over the country and I am not kidding you, this is some of the best I've had. Get the seafood salad roll. It's to die for. It's a mom and pop sushi joint and they are the ones rolling the sushi. Give them a try.

it looks like a hole in the wall, but what they're saving on a big fancy building they're putting into making for better sushi. I ordered a few different rolls and some nigiri, spreading myself away from the usual salmon and tuna to getting some eel and baby octopus. It was all prepared perfectly and arrived looking like it's supposed to - edible art. With it, a large bottle of Asahi Super Dry.

Drive-thru sushi that is excellent quality. Are you kidding me? This place is awesome. Doesn't look like much from the outside or even on the inside actually but I promise you it's the best, freshest sushi in the Charleston/Mt Pleasant area and we have tried pretty much everywhere looking for a go-to sushi spot. I can get past the decor and cleanliness being substandard. The solid service is a big plus. But, the sushi here is bland. Putting tuna nigiri into your mouth should be a memorable experience and that just isn't the case at The Oriental Garden. The spider rolls never seem fresh and the spicy tuna rolls aren't spicy. The squid is usually good. The Udon noodle dish is like a weak chicken soup. The sad truth is that Charleston just doesn't have good sushi anymore. Our last hope went out the window when the venerable Sushi Hiro mutated into the horrible O-Ku several years ago.

If I could order takeout here every night, I would. Since they're closed on Sundays I'll stick to Monday-Saturday. Kidding. But seriously... 9 times out of 10 this is my Friday night treat and I look forward to it all week. Simple rolls, but so fresh and always delicious! The staff is so friendly, and I've never been disappointed. 10 out of 10-would make fort in one of booths and live in it so I could eat here all day, everyday.

I've never had a bad meal here, though I know the look of the place can be a bit off-putting for some. Certainly, it could use a makeover but that aside, the sushi has always tasted very fresh and it's had the same proprietors for years. If you're expecting glitz, this is not the place. Generally, i go with sushi there because I love it, but last night I had a couple of appetizers instead: steamed dumplings (yum!!) and tempura tofu. Both delish. Fiancé had Charleston, Washington & Philadelphia rolls, all very yummy (their rolls are 6 pieces). Very casual, low-key place (seat yourself) but in my opinion, good value & good food.

good food, never enjoyed any of their servers! the food comes quick and nicely prepared but it just always seems to be a great burden for some of the waitstaff to appear friendly... don't get me wrong, I don't mean bad people but rather the "don't really care" impression. oh, and I really dislike the decor and atmosphere, but as I said, the food is a bit pricey but always of quality and well prepared! the tempura is not greasy and very crunchy and the fish is always fresh! if you do have a hunkering for some sushi give it a shot!

This was my first time at Oriental Garden. We had sushi and house salads. The shushi was delicious and fresh. The servers were very nice, and attentive. The only downside to this place is the interior! It could really use a facelift. It just doesn't feel clean, and the ceiling tiles are disgusting. The parking lot is also in bad need of repairs. There are huge potholes in the parking lot, which could be very dangerous and bad for cars. I would love to see this neat little spot for sushi have a good facelift!

Good, expensive sushi. Hole in the wall type of diner ambience, which I like. Sushi was excellent, the Uni was just okay, a little bit bitter and not the best. Quick, friendly service without being all in your face about it. I'd go back on payday.

jesus, did this place spoil me. grew up coming here and am now living in NYC where you can spend $50 on sushi and still leave the restaurant hungry. post dinner dollar slices are, almost always, required. at OG, three rolls will run you less than $20. and these rolls are huge. like, I challenge you to finish three huge. don't let the store front fool you, as it did my mother, who refused to go for years. yes, it looks run down. yes, most wonder if it is even open for business. but (as with my mother) one trip and you'll be converted. this is my FIRST stop whenever I make a trip home and am always greeted by Ms Lee (owner) with open arms and a complementary fried ice-cream dessert. I wouldn't go anywhere else for sushi in Charleston. tips: -order the ginger sauce to dunk you sushi in, essentially soy sauce but sweeter -drive-thru pick-up available -CRAB SALAD roll. wrapped in lettuce rather than seaweed, incredibly healthy and fresh tasting

I live in West Ashley and will drive out of the way to come here. I'm a huge fan of hole-in-the-wall, unpretentious restaurants that serve delicious and affordable food anyways. The exterior decor like everyone has mentioned is not the most upkept, but I feel like it's part of the charm-- you feel like you are finding a gem because the sushi is so great. I've only tried the sushi, but they do it well -- huge portions and always delicious. Definitely don't skip out on coming here because you're judging the book by its cover!

I have eaten here many times and have yet been disappointed. The sushi is excellent and the hot foods are too! My favorite is that they will wrap any sushi in cucumber instead of rice. Last night I had the cucumber wrapped crab and avocado roll and loved it. They always have special rolls that are definitely worth trying as they are always good! I've never had the veggie tempura but someone next to us got it last night and it looked really good. Will definitely be giving that a try next time. Though the food is awesome, the atmosphere is not great. Could use a little renovation and clean up. Not the type of place you would want to go for a fancy dinner or date night. Save oriental garden for your casual nights for sure.

Talk about good sushi! Very fresh and very yummy! The restaurant has a "Welcome to my home" kind of feeling. It's laid back and casual enough where you can be comfortable enough to drop by at any time regardless of your attire. At the same time you can go and have a nice date night too. The service is great and the owners are super nice! Make sure to leave room for fried ice cream...you won't be disappointed!

From the outside, Oriental Garden is pretty unassuming, but don't let it's neglected decor scare you. When I'm craving some sushi & don't feel like heading to your typical restaurant, this is the place to go. Their sushi comes out quickly and always tastes great! I'll be honest: I tend to be one for ambiance, so I usually pick it up to go, but when I was here a few days ago, I was pleased to see that their tables were pretty packed. Service is pretty standard, and we had our food in under 20 minutes. They have plenty of your basic rolls to satisfy your cravings, plus quite a few specials. I can't remember exactly what I had (sorry!), but I'd probably skip the Alaska next go around. I usually love it, but the salmon was chewy in one of the pieces, & it kind of freaked me out. Still, if you find yourself with a hankering for some sushi on Coleman, I'd recommend trying this place out!

Been a few times. Recently went on a Sat night. Great dive vibe, feels like a diamond in the rough. Not quite there though. Rolls were the sloppiest, most inconsistent, lazily prepared I'd ever seen. And I've eaten a lot of sushi. Ordered 6 rolls, they came out in about 5 minutes! Fish was fresh and tasted good. The yellowtail was shredded which is not how I like it personally...not sure why you'd shred great yellowtail. Value seemed good though. We had large chunks of tuna in our rolls that really stood out.

Here's the truth - I used to drive by this place all the time and laugh, thinking to myself, "there is no way I'm getting sushi from a place that looks like that". They have a drive thru - seriously. It's a former fast food joint, turned into a sushi spot, without improving or even trying to spruce up the look of the place. Then I started hearing people talk about how great the sushi was. I was shocked, and honestly, because I didn't believe it possible, I decided I had to try it myself so I could prove everyone wrong. Well, only one proven wrong was me! This place is great! Want an unpretentious atmosphere that focuses solely on the focus of the food they're giving you? GO. I love sushi. This place has the best in Charleston. Don't just trust my word or the rest of the reviewers who have said the same. Get on out there yourself and have some awesome food! (Downfall - the hours. Only open for dinner.) Why 4 stars instead of 5? Sorry, looks does bear some importance when you're going out for a meal. A little ambiance sure wouldn't hurt anyone. :-)

If you're in Mt. Pleasant and you're hungry for sushi, this is the place to go. My faves, spicy tuna with lettuce, spicy salmon with avocado (special order), softshell crab (I know it's fried in advance, but it's still so good). Do carry out; they have a drive-through. Or pop in to the funky bar at Fonduely Yours next door while you wait. It's not the casual atmosphere I mind, but why do sushi restaurants always smell like pine-sol? Guess it means they clean really well, but it's not appetizing. Second best sushi in town, next to O-Ku downtown.

This place makes THE BEST sushi in Charleston, in the South East, and probably in all of America! Located on Coleman Blvd in Mt. Pleasant, the exterior decor is not much to look at. Inside, there's a small dining room with maybe 8 booths and a couple of seating chairs by the sushi bar, but MAN OH MAN, do they know how to make their sushi. My friend's family has been coming here for years, and they introduced me to it a few years back. Recently, I was home and visited; it was a great trip down memory lane...a lane of wonderful cucumber sushi, great spicy tuna rolls, awesome soft shell crab rolls, and so many others I can't even begin to list them all. I DEFINITELY recommend you coming here and trying it for yourself!

This place is scary from the outside, and I believe in not judging a book by its cover, but in this case, the outside reflects the food. This was possibly one of the worst meals I've had in Charleston and possibly the worst sushi anywhere. We also had a teriyaki meal and the best part was the miso soup. The portions were small, vegetables uncooked, and rice was bad. The sushi tasted like there was burnt plastic in it. Did not taste or appear fresh at all. The dynamite appetizer is a mystery meal, not sure what's in this, but it was tough. This was a gross meal, I can't put it any other way. The service was friendly and other people seemed to be enjoying it, I don't know what they had, maybe just bad taste.
